If you've never heard of vegetable wash or don't know what it is or why you need it, here's the breakdown.

Then, we'll tell you the 3 highly recommended vegetable wash brands you should consider.

We'll also give you an easy recipe at the end for those of us who like home DIYs.

Vegetable wash is a cleaning spray that you can use to wash away the dirt, pesticides, wax, etc from your fruits and vegetables.

You can buy some that companies pre-made, or you could make a solution for yourself at home, but here's what it does that just washing your fruits and vegetables with water can not do for you:

  • it removes any pesticides left on your produce

  • it removes dirt, debris, etc that pile up on the fruits/vegetables you eat

  • it washes away a lot of bacteria and pathogens, so your chances of getting food poisoning are lower

  • it gets rid of the waxes and coatings that are put on fruits and vegetables to keep them on store shelves longer

  • it makes a lot of your produce taste better since you're washing away all the unwanted residues from it

  • your health gets better because you aren't eating these residues

It's easy to use a vegetable wash.

For some brands, dilute the solution in a water bowl, put your fruits and vegetables in it, soak them for a few minutes, and then rinse them.

For other brands, you spray your produce with the solution, rub it for 30 seconds to a minute, and then rinse it off.

3 Highly Recommended Vegetable Wash Brands You Should Consider

1. Fit Organic Fruit and Vegetable Wash

If you’ve never used a vegetable wash before, this one is a great one to start with because it is good quality and gluten-free for anyone with celiac disease or a gluten allergy.

It’s gentle and doesn’t come with that slight chemical aftertaste you get with other brands.

One thing to note is that it’s easy to use on fruits and vegetables that can be rubbed, like pears and carrots.

For fruits like grapes, we recommend opening the spray bottle and pouring some of the solution into a water bowl to wash the grapes in.

You can also find a bottle without the nozzle if you prefer to wash your produce in a bowl without spraying and rubbing each one.

2. Veggie Wash Natural Fruit & Vegetable Wash

Like us, you’ll probably be shocked at how different your fruits and vegetables look when you use a vegetable wash.

Warning: You might even feel grossed out after all those years of not using one.

This one is similar to Fit Organic because it has no aftertaste.

The only difference between it and Fit Organic is that it does have a tiny citrus-like smell, but not much.

3. Arm & Hammer Fruit & Vegetable Wash

Like the Fit Organic and Veggie Wash Natural, this one does a great job cleaning produce.

It doesn’t smell and doesn’t leave an aftertaste.

Even though the others don’t have harsh chemicals, this one is huge on not having harsh chemicals since it only has 7 ingredients.

On a funny note, reader, it’s strange how when you’re choosing a vegetable wash to buy, you have to filter out the brands with chemicals even though the job of a vegetable wash is to remove the chemicals from your produce, to begin with.

The package says to spray your fruit or vegetable and wait 15 minutes before rinsing it for maximum results.

We recommend pouring the solution into a bowl and washing all your produce at once since waiting 15 minutes every time you want an apple gets annoying.

DIY Homemade Vegetable Wash Recipe

If you’re a DIYer, here is an easy vegetable wash recipe you could make at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of distilled white vinegar

  • 1 cup of water

  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda

  • 1 lemon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl or a clean spray bottle, combine all the ingredients and stir or shake well

How To Use:

  1. Soak or spray your vegetable wash over your fruits and vegetables.

  2. Gently rub or brush them.

  3. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Here’s what each ingredient does:

Distilled White Vinegar - acts as a natural disinfectant to help you get rid of bacteria and some pesticides. It also enables you to break down the wax and remove the residue on your fruits and vegetables.

Baking Soda - helps you scrub away dirt and contaminants.

Lemon - It adds a pleasant scent and has antimicrobial properties (there is something in lemon that can kill bacteria and viruses)

So which one is better, a store-bought vegetable wash or a homemade one?

We always recommend a store-bought one because you can be sure the mixture works well, so you’re not getting those pesticides, waxes, and coatings in your body, but if you like the idea of a DIY because you could make the amount you want in the way you like, then go for a homemade vegetable wash (it will work to some extent, but the problem is that unless you test it out in a lab, you won’t be sure how good it is).

FAQ

  • The problem is that soaps are made with ingredients that aren’t edible, and it’s very hard to make sure all the chemicals from the soap are washed off; otherwise, it could become very dangerous.

  • Yes.

For the ones with thick skins or a lot of curves (things like potatoes, lettuce, root vegetables, and leafy greens), you need a little more attention when you’re washing them because dirt, bacteria, etc.… gets trapped on them, and a light wash is not enough.

  • Yes.

You can mix vinegar with water, but you won’t know how well it removes pesticides and other chemicals from the produce.

  • Cold water works fine, and if you use hot water, some of the fruits/vegetables, like herbs and lettuce, can become soggy and lose a tiny bit of their nutrients.

  • It’s better to always wash all your fruits and vegetables with vegetable wash because since they have chemicals on them, it would be tough to peel them without getting dirt and bacteria on the part you’re going to eat.

Conclusion

It’s usually the people who pay attention to the little things in their bodies who see the difference. Using vegetable wash protects you from a lot of the debris, bacteria, wax, and coatings you would have otherwise eaten.
